They are one the most puzzling successful bands I have ever heard. He is such a horrible singer he might as well be singing in Farsi, the original sax player was truly talentless, the violinist is possibly one of the worst professional musicians in a popular band I have ever heard,I would think you could walk into any junior high and the violinist in the band could match his abilities,as for the bass player he is on par with the violinist and sax player(he shows off his stunning lack of ability in the video below) and Dave's ability on guitar matches his vocal chops, the drummer seems to bash his way along.

I randomly picked a recent version of Watchtower and unearthed this gem,it opens with a 4 minute bass solo that I think Phil could play now at 70 something if you broke all ten of his fingers, the joker with the violin then assaults your senses with a comical solo and Dave sings it in a bizarre fashion,a hilariously bad attempt.

I play bass...that was punishingly weak for a stage pro. Sounded like scale practice.

try this instead http://tinyurl.com/b2rz69u

I'll take Phish...if I have to choose. Like choosing a root canal over a hip replacement.

But if you compare most of the touring bass players out there to either "Ox", Phil or Tim Bogert; don't most fall short of the benchmark?

And JSYK, I am not a big DMB fan. I don't change stations of he comes on the radio. Pleasant listening with not much substance. I guess it is kinda like "hippie elevator music".

I had no real opinion up to now.... I usually don't inspect dogshit on the street, I just avoid it completely.

I am still a little unsure about how you feel about their musical abilities.........

FWIW, the vast majority of musicians I've spoken to at music festivals won't argue with the commercial success of DMB, but they were almost universal in their opinion that Matthews himself is an arrogant prick - while at the same time admitting they wouldn't mind opening for them.
